Cosmetic Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

woman showing perfect left earOtoplasty, or cosmetic ear surgery, is typically performed to correct excessively large or prominent ears.  While usually performed on children and teenagers, otoplasty can be for done for adults desiring to correct their ear shape.

What to expect: Cosmetic Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

The surgery involves incisions behind each ear.  Dr. Shore removes excess cartilage and reshapes the remaining cartilage framework.  After repositioning the ears closer to the head, the incisions are closed and the head is wrapped in a surgical bandage.  This is performed either in the office under local anesthesia, or as an outpatient surgery under general anesthesia.

After surgery, discomfort is controlled by prescription pain medication.  Activity will be limited to light activity, and sleeping on the side is prohibited.  Sutures are either dissolvable, or are removed 10 days after the procedure.  A headband will need to be worn for 2-4 weeks following the procedure, to allow the ears to heal in their new position.
