BREAST LIFT
(MASTOPEXY)

Recreate a Youthful, Perky Shape

Unlike breast augmentation, a breast lift (mastopexy) does not boost volume by adding an implant. Instead, a woman’s own breast tissues are lifted and tightened to create a rounder, perkier, and more youthful appearance. This surgery is best for women who do not want larger breasts, but have noticed deflation of the breast tissues with aging, weight changes, or pregnancy/breastfeeding. If you like your size and shape in a bra, but wish your breasts were naturally perkier, then a breast lift may be the right procedure for you!

Scar Pattern

Donut, lollipop, anchor pattern: All of these describe shapes of scars that could be used to reshape the breasts. Scarring is the necessary trade-off for a breast lift, and the recommended scar pattern will vary from person to person. All scars sit at and below the level of the areola, so they are hidden within full coverage bras, low cut tops, and bikinis. While scarring is permanent, the scars are given lots of TLC after surgery with topical creams, tapes, and gels, so that they remain soft, flat, thin and faded.

Recovery

Breast lift is an outpatient procedure. Local anesthetics are used during surgery to minimize the need for pain medication afterwards. Drains are rarely used. A stabilizing bra is placed before awakening, and you will wear this for several weeks day and night after surgery. Arm movements are initially limited to light, slow movements below the shoulders. Return to desk work can happen after about one week, and full return to all exercise happens at six weeks. Low impact cardio, such as walking, is encouraged starting the day after surgery. At two weeks, tapes are removed and scar care is started.

Other Considerations

It is possible that the ability to breastfeed could be negatively impacted, either partially or entirely. If breastfeeding in the future is a priority, breast surgery should be postponed until after any breastfeeding is complete. One must wait at least 6 months from finishing lactating until surgery may proceed, to avoid complications.

Breast health screening according to recommended guidelines should always be followed. If appropriate, Dr. Shore will review or order the correct screening test (usually a mammogram) before surgery. Breast reduction will not interfere with the ability to safely obtain mammograms in the future.
